２０２５年第６７回全日本こけしコンクールで展示された作品です

　昨年の全日本こけしコンクールで思いがけず大きな賞をいただきました。さらに出した作品はすべて即日完売し、大きな自信を持つことができました。この出来事から『だっこしてなでて』を僕の代表作品にすることを決めました。今年はどんな作品にするのか、悩むと思いきやまったく迷いはありませんでした。なぜなら、会場のお客様から「うさぎさんがほしい」とリクエストされて、「来年用意します」と約束したからです。さらに大きくなった耳が目立つ作品となりました。

　僕がこと更にこだわったのは『桧の美しい木目』です。木彫の仏像として平安時代から最も多く使われている木材は「桧」である事実を偶然手にした本で知りました。この本からは有名な仏像が数多く存在する西日本においてはそのほとんどが「桧」で作られてきたことも学びました。こけしを西日本の人たちにもっともっと知ってもらいたいと常々思っていた僕は、西日本の人に馴染みのある「桧」を積極的に使っていこうと考えました。そこで、白く綺麗な木目をもっとも良く見せることができる「無節」の二方柾を手に入れました。整った木目模様はとても美しく、描彩を極限まで抑えることにしている『だっこしてなでて』の風合いにピッタリはまりました。
　僕はこけしの特徴あるモチーフとして、ともかく木目を積極的に見せようと思い「無節材」を探しました。この作品の木肌は念には念を入れて磨き上げています。昨年のコンクールにおいて思い切って「節目がある桧」の作品を出してみたら、「彩色した水木」よりも好評で、コンクールの後にも国内はもとよりフランスの方からもリクエストをもらうことができました。このときに海外では節目はないほうが好まれることを学びました。節目があると木を削るのが難しいこともあるので、それらを勘案して今後は「無節」の製材された木材を探して作ろうと考えています。
　今年の作品においても、ベース塗料には木目をきれいに見せることができる、岩手県の自然塗料UOILを使っています。つやが出る、長持ちする、舐めても大丈夫、さらにはカビに強いなどの特性を合わせ持っていて、僕の作品作りには欠かせない素材です。

　これらのチャレンジによって、西日本ならびに海外にもっともっと知れ渡ることを願っている次第です。

This work was exhibited at the 67th All Japan Kokeshi Competition in 2025.

Last year, I unexpectedly received a major prize at the All Japan Kokeshi Competition. Furthermore, all the pieces I submitted were sold out on the same day, which gave me a lot of confidence. After this incident, I decided to make "Hold Me and Stroke Me" my representative work. I thought I would be worried about what kind of work I would make this year, but I didn't have any doubts at all. Because the customers at the venue requested "I want a rabbit," and I promised to "prepare one next year." The ears have gotten even bigger, which is what makes the piece stand out.

What I was particularly particular about was the "beautiful grain of cypress." I learned from a book I happened to have that cypress has been the most commonly used wood for wooden Buddhist statues since the Heian period. From this book, I also learned that in Western Japan, where there are many famous Buddhist statues, most of them have been made from cypress. I have always wanted people in Western Japan to know more about kokeshi, so I thought I would actively use cypress, which is familiar to people in Western Japan. So I got a knot-free Niho Masashi, which can best show off the beautiful white grain. The neat grain pattern is very beautiful and fits perfectly with the texture of "Hold Me and Pet Me," which is designed to keep color to a minimum.

I wanted to make the wood grain visible as a distinctive motif for kokeshi dolls, so I searched for knot-free lumber. The wood grain of this piece has been polished with the utmost care. I took a chance and submitted a piece made of knotted cypress in last year's competition, which was more popular than my painted Mizuki, and even after the competition I received requests from people in France as well as in Japan. I learned that knot-free lumber is preferred overseas. Knots can make it difficult to carve wood, so taking this into consideration, I plan to look for knot-free sawn lumber in the future.

For this year's work, I used UOIL, a natural paint from Iwate Prefecture, as the base paint, which allows the grain of the wood to be shown beautifully. It has a variety of properties, including a glossy finish, long life, safety when licked, and mold resistance, making it an indispensable material in my creations.

I hope that through these challenges, wood will become even more well-known in western Japan and overseas.
